Benefits of a Gas Insert

A gas insert is a sealed firebox that slides into the masonry fireplace you already have—and it's more than half of what we do. Seattle's 1900–1950 houses are full of open fireboxes that pull more warm air up the flue than the fire ever puts back. An insert turns that hole in the wall into the most efficient heater in the house.

Fit is the whole game. We measure your firebox, check the flue and the gas supply at a free in-home visit, and trim the unit to honor the surround that's already there—we've fit fires into 1928 Batchelder tile without touching a single glazed edge. Inside-fit or overlap, made to measure, never a panel bolted over the original.

He answered our questions clearly and readily and gave us great instruction on the basics to get us started with the manual and first steps. Easy to interact with and a good finished product. On October 14 Jack returned to install the replacement piece that had arrived broken (twice!). He was patient, careful and thorough in making the installation of the correct piece and replacing the other logs. He showed us again how to work the remote to start up the fireplace. He carefully reviewed the process for burning off the chemicals that come with new parts, which we had waited to do until all pieces were here.

He took the time to explain everything clearly, answered all my questions, made sure I was happy with the work being done, and made sure everything was working properly before leaving. Ryan listened to my end goals and was able to find a great solution for us. Ryan also took good care of our home in protecting the work area and cleaning up upon completion. It’s refreshing to have someone who genuinely cares about helping people and takes pride in their work. He was professional, friendly, and clearly cared about our having not just a well-working fireplace, but a terrific customer experience as well. He is the kind of in-home service technician one always hopes to have, but so seldom actually gets. Ryan provided great customer service. I had to call someone else I can tell you I was more than happy that now they service our area. They are honest trustworthy and provide great service. I don’t think gas fireplaces are something you shouldn’t service regularly. Their tech China came out and was so professional and knowledgeable about each fireplace cleaning even the front panels so exceptional. I told her my concerns and she was very nice to explain everything. See you next year and thank you!

We reached out several years ago for a quote and finally made the decision to have one installed at our house place just north of Seattle. We were highly pleased with the experience and professionalism that the sales team and the in-home estimator brought in every contact. The installation team was great and made sure to have drop clothes down to protect our carpet and ensured everything was in order after install, including a thorough explanation of maintenance and functionality. Highly impressed and are now able to utilize our largest room in our house all through the winter with the nice complementary gas insert. Definitely top notch customer service and installation. Not only are the fireplaces amazing and a great addition to the house but Sutter has been exceptional to work with. First, they are extremely knowledgeable. You walk in with a million questions and walk out with answers! They provide clear information to help you make a decision and aren't pushy about it. Pre install, they come to your house and measure everything to ensure everything will fit just right. They do custom surrounds to match your house's unique style and provide good design direction. Install is smooth (so much that even the inspectors were impressed) and the handoff is seamless. I can't recommend Sutter enough and would highly recommend them for your gas fireplace needs!

All other companies laughed at us given the size of the fireplace opening, but Sutter was really helpful and gave us some suggestions on where to find one that might fit. We found one, they ordered it and installed it. They also gave us great advice on a mason to help adjust some of the masonry work needed before the install. Our new gas insert looks great, really warms up our living room in the winter and is a great focal point for the house.

In the end, we got a great fireplace that didn't break the bank. They also had to install it before the remodeling was completed, so they worked with the contractor to explain where the chimney had to go, etc. After the remodel, they came over to teach us how to use the fireplace and help "break it in". It really is the heart of the house thanks to them.

The team went above and beyond to fast track installation so that we could get some use during these waning cold months. We got the best advice for selecting a unit that met our price point, no fast talking toward a more expensive unit, and, when asked, gave us their take on best looking surrounds that would work with our space. The scope of the work, replacing fireplace surround from atop our very tall house, was more than we had expected and left us better appreciating the labor expenses. It was hard to find a nice looking gas log set after 42 years of wood fires. Super convenient with remote, and the G52 model kicks out a lot of heat at half the gas use. Peterson makes a high quality gas firelog system.

The fireplace looked so good, was the cleanest I had ever seen it, basically brand new, and she went out of her way to repair one of the logs that had broken. Plus they do annual maintenance and inspection for a reasonable fee which I will take advantage of for safety and ease of maintenance (inspection, adding rockwool bits to enhance embers and flame appearance, plus cleaning of glass screens). How much does a gas insert cost installed in Seattle?

Most gas insert projects in Seattle land between $7,000 and $12,000 installed. A Valor Legend G3 averages about $7,000 all-in; a big-glass unit like the Mendota FV44i runs closer to $12,000. Your instant estimate narrows it to your firebox; the free in-home visit makes it exact.

Does a gas insert need an electrical outlet?

Depends on the unit. A Valor heats without a fan or an outlet—no electrical permit, and it keeps working in a power outage. A corded insert like a Mendota needs an outlet in the firebox, which adds roughly $1,500 for the electrician and the electrical permit. It's a per-unit detail and we flag it on every recommendation.

Do you need a permit to install a gas insert in Seattle?

Yes—gas and venting work is permitted and inspected in every jurisdiction we serve, and it should be. We pull the permit on every job and meet the inspector. It's built into the process, not an upsell.

Will a gas insert fit a small fireplace opening?

Usually, yes. Small and odd-sized fireboxes are a Seattle specialty—other shops have laughed customers out the door over openings we've fit inserts into. Measure the width, height, and depth of your firebox, or just bring photos to the showroom and we'll tell you straight.

Will a gas insert ruin your original tile surround?

Not on our watch. Inside-fit inserts and made-to-measure overlap trims keep the original surround visible—the goal is to accentuate what's there, never to cover it. Bring photos to the showroom or upload one to the visualizer and we'll show you.

How long does gas insert installation take?

Stocked units are usually a few weeks out depending on the season. On install day it's liner down the chimney, gas connected, trim fitted, and the first fire lit before we leave. Built-to-order units carry honest lead times we state up front.

How do you measure a fireplace for a gas insert?

Measure the firebox opening's width and height at the front, then the depth to the back wall, and note whether the back wall slants in. Those three numbers tell us which inserts can fit; the flue and the gas supply tell us which should. Bring the numbers or photos to the showroom, and the free in-home visit confirms every one before anything is ordered.

What is a gas fireplace insert, and how does it work?

A gas insert is a sealed firebox that slides into the masonry fireplace you already have and vents up the old chimney through a liner. The glass front seals the room off from the flue, so the draft that pulled warm air out of your house stops, and the burner heats the room instead of the sky. Most Seattle houses with an existing firebox want the insert.
