An upright see-through fire with a little more presence.

Quick Facts

  • Heating Capacity: 750–1,450 sq ft
  • Viewing Area: 21 3/4" wide
  • Fuel: Natural gas; propane with a conversion kit.
  • Controls: Remote with thermostat included; wall switch and phone app available.

Who It's For

An upright fire suits a narrow shared wall, but in a living room the slimmest one can look timid from both sides. You need the vertical shape with more fire in it. If you want a 21 3/4 by 29 1/8-inch opening shared by two rooms, the Tunnel 60x80 is the size.

What Makes It Special

The 60x80 tunnel steps up from the 40x70 to the 45 burner and offers a mesh screen or double glass, so each room sees a taller, fuller flame.

Frameless edges let the wall finish run straight to the flame, and passive cool wall technology keeps the wall over the fire usable for a TV or art. By our math on Ortal's gas input, it's sized to warm approximately 750 to 1,450 square feet.

With the screen version and no lights, it can run on batteries, which means it still lights during an outage. The included remote has a thermostat mode, so you set a temperature and it manages the flame.

Possible Downsides

  • The double-glass and tall-glass versions need household power (tall-glass models include interior lighting) and won't run in an outage.
  • It's still a vertical fire; for a classic, nearly square see-through, the Tunnel 75x65 is wider.
  • It ships set up for natural gas; propane takes a conversion kit installed by an Ortal-authorized technician.

If you want an upright see-through fire for a narrow shared wall, the Tunnel 60x80 is the right decision. Two rooms share a fire that looks like a framed painting from both sides.

Make it yours with a mesh screen or double glass and any of the five included log sets, with bonfire, campfire, aspen, and branch sets as upgrades.
