A linear Wilderness log fire at living-room width.

Quick Facts

  • Viewing Area: 43 5/8" wide
  • Fuel: Natural gas or propane.
  • Controls: Remote with thermostat included; wall switch and phone app available.

Who It's For

Modern linear fireplaces often look like a row of jets over glass beads. If you love a clean, frameless wall but want the fire to look like wood, you shouldn't have to choose. You need a linear fire with real-looking logs. If your living room wall suits about 44 inches of fire, the Wilderness Front Facing 44 is the starting size.

What Makes It Special

The 44 lays three ceramic logs—driftwood, valley oak, or birch—across a 43 5/8-inch opening, and this listing offers standard, tall, and extra-tall glass.

Nothing frames the opening but your own finish, and because of Ortal's passive cool wall, the wall above stays open for a TV or artwork. Expect it to warm roughly 800 to 1,600 square feet, our estimate from Ortal's gas input.

Choose between a protective mesh screen and double glass; the double glass uses quiet fans between the panes so the front stays cooler to the touch. Skip the lighting and use the screen, and batteries alone can run it—it still lights when the power is out. Pick a temperature on the remote that comes with it, and the fire turns itself up and down to hold it.

Possible Downsides

  • The double-glass version needs household power and won't run during an outage.
  • Logs are the only fire media; for a wider wall at the same warmth, the Wilderness Front Facing 51 adds about seven inches.

If you want a frameless linear fire that looks like real wood, the Wilderness Front Facing 44 is the right decision. The fire becomes the thing you watch, the way you'd watch a campfire.

Choose a mesh screen or double glass with glass 15 3/4", 21 5/8", or 29 1/2" tall and driftwood, valley oak, or birch logs.
