Who It's For

The stove is fine; the stack of split logs beside it is the problem. It never looks tidy, and it never sits where you want it. You need the wood to live under the fire, out of the way and within reach. If you want one object instead of a stove plus a log pile, the Stûv 16-H is the one; pick a stove on legs and the logs stay on the floor beside it.

What Makes It Special

There is no fan anywhere in a Stûv 16. Room air enters low, warms along the firebox, and leaves through a slot at the top on its own. That is why the stove is silent, why it keeps heating when the power is out, and why there is nothing to wear out or replace.

The H base lifts the firebox to eye level from a sofa and leaves an open bay underneath for a night's wood. The outside-air connector is designed into the base, so nothing shows at the back.

The air feed is set once at the factory and left alone. You start the fire and close the door; the stove manages the burn, and a sweep of air across the glass keeps it clear so you see flames, not soot. Air jets at the top of the firebox burn the smoke a second time, which is how it clears the strictest North American emission standards with 1.5 to 1.8 grams of particulate an hour.

Possible Downsides

  • No fan, so it warms the room it stands in. Heat reaches the next room by convection only.
  • The log bay is open shelving. Bark and dust land on the floor plate, not in a drawer.
  • The door needs its key to open. There is no handle.

If you want the firewood built into the stove instead of stacked beside it, the Stûv 16-H is the right decision. The wood is always there, and the room looks finished even in February.

The 16-H comes in three sizes and two finishes, StûvGrey or Black, with a floor plate in Black or StûvGrey, mobile log racks, and a Mobilobox for kindling.
