A 68-inch see-through for a long shared wall.

Quick Facts

  • Heating Capacity: 1,100–2,200 sq ft
  • Viewing Area: 68 1/16" wide
  • Fuel: Natural gas; propane with a conversion kit.
  • Controls: Remote with thermostat included; wall switch and phone app available.

Who It's For

If the wall between two large rooms runs long, a five-foot tunnel leaves blank wall on both sides. You need more length. If you want a 68 1/16-inch see-through with standard or taller glass, the Tunnel 170 is the longer option on the same burner as the 150.

What Makes It Special

The 170 tunnel stretches the 135 burner across a longer opening, with 13 3/4 or 21 5/8-inch glass on both faces.

Frameless edges let the wall finish run straight to the flame, and passive cool wall technology keeps the wall over the fire usable for a TV or art. By our math on Ortal's gas input, it's sized to warm approximately 1,100 to 2,200 square feet.

Choose between a protective mesh screen and double glass; the double glass uses quiet fans between the panes so the front stays cooler to the touch. With the screen version and no lights, it can run on batteries, which means it still lights during an outage. Pick a temperature on the remote that comes with it, and the fire turns itself up and down to hold it.

Possible Downsides

  • The double-glass and tall-glass versions need household power (tall-glass models include interior lighting) and won't run in an outage.
  • Same warmth as the 150; the Tunnel 200 moves to the 160 burner.
  • It ships set up for natural gas; propane takes a conversion kit installed by an Ortal-authorized technician.

If your shared wall runs long, the Tunnel 170 is the right decision. The fire runs the length of the wall on both sides.

Choose a mesh screen or double glass with glass 13 3/4" or 21 5/8" tall and any of the five included log sets, with bonfire, campfire, aspen, and branch sets as upgrades.
