Who It's For
A traditional fireplace with a gas log set often gives itself away: tidy logs, flames in a row. You need a classic hearth where the fire looks like wood. If you want a squared, brick-lined opening in a living room or den with Ortal's most realistic log fire, the Wilderness Traditional 36 is the smaller of the two. The 42 suits a larger room.
What Makes It Special
The Wilderness burner sends flame up through sculpted ceramic logs—driftwood, valley oak, or birch—stacked like a real fire, inside a firebox lined with brick panels in herringbone or horizontal patterns.
Your stone or tile meets the fire with no trim in between, and Ortal's passive cool wall means the space above can hold a TV or a painting. Our estimate from Ortal's gas input puts its reach at roughly 800 to 1,600 square feet.
The heat barrier is your call: a fine mesh screen that keeps hands off the hot glass, or a double-glass front cooled by fans between the panes. Skip the lighting and use the screen, and batteries alone can run it—it still lights when the power is out. Set a temperature on the included remote and it holds the room there on its own.
Possible Downsides
- Double glass runs on the plug-in adapter, so that version is dark during a power outage.
- Logs are the only fire media; for a bigger opening, the Wilderness Traditional 42 is the next size up.
- The black reflective interior is optional, not standard.
If you want a traditional hearth with a fire that looks laid by hand, the Wilderness Traditional 36 is the right decision. Game nights and quiet evenings move to the room with the fire.
Configure it with a mesh screen or double glass, driftwood, valley oak, or birch logs, and a red, tan, or black brick in herringbone or horizontal patterns, flat black, or Blackridge firebox panel, and add a black reflective interior if you like.

Can you get an instant online estimate for the Ortal Traditional Fireplace 36?
Yes—right on this page. Configure the Ortal Traditional Fireplace 36 and get a free, no-obligation instant estimate covering the unit as configured, a fitting vent kit, and professional installation labor. No phone call required.
What's included in the online estimate?
The unit with the options you selected, a real vent kit matched to your venting, and the installation labor for a typical setup. Your free one-to-two-hour in-home visit confirms every detail before anything is ordered.
Who pulls the permit?
We do, on every job, in every jurisdiction we serve—and we meet the inspector. It's built into the process, not an upsell.
Can you see the Ortal Traditional Fireplace 36 in a photo of your own room?
Yes. The Visualizer tab on this page renders the Ortal Traditional Fireplace 36 into a straight-on photo of your wall, scaled to the room, so you see it in your space before you price a thing. Phone photos are fine. It's a faithful preview, not an architectural drawing; sizing, venting, and trim get confirmed at the free in-home visit.
Is the online estimate real, or a rough guess?
Real, and honest about what it is: a price for the Ortal Traditional Fireplace 36 as configured, a fitting vent kit, and professional installation labor, built from real Seattle installs. It is not binding. The free one-to-two-hour in-home visit checks your actual house before the price is final, and nothing is ordered until then.
Do you install and service the Ortal Traditional Fireplace 36 yourselves?
Yes, both. Our own in-house installers set the Ortal Traditional Fireplace 36, run the venting and the gas, pull the permit, and light the first fire before leaving. Afterward the service desk looks after every unit that came from Sutter, with factory-trained technicians and a real date when you call.
