A wider Wilderness log fire for a longer wall.

Quick Facts

  • Heating Capacity: 800–1,600 sq ft
  • Viewing Area: 50 5/16" wide
  • Fuel: Natural gas or propane.
  • Controls: Remote with thermostat included; wall switch and phone app available.

Who It's For

On a wall longer than a typical living room's, a 44-inch log fire can look short. You need more length without changing the look. If you want about 50 inches of Wilderness log fire in standard or tall glass, the Wilderness Front Facing 51 is the next size.

What Makes It Special

The 51 spreads driftwood, valley oak, or birch logs across a 50 5/16-inch opening, with glass 15 3/4 or 21 5/8 inches tall.

The face is frameless, so tile or stone runs right to the edge of the fire, and Ortal's passive cool wall design leaves room for a TV or artwork right above it. On Ortal's gas input, our estimate is approximately 800 to 1,600 square feet of warmth.

The heat barrier is your call: a fine mesh screen that keeps hands off the hot glass, or a double-glass front cooled by fans between the panes. With the screen version and no lights, it can run on batteries, which means it still lights during an outage. Set a temperature on the included remote and it holds the room there on its own.

Possible Downsides

  • Double glass runs on the plug-in adapter, so that version is dark during a power outage.
  • Same warmth as the 44; for much more reach, the Wilderness Front Facing 68 moves to the larger long-log burner.

If your wall is wider than a 44 fills, the Wilderness Front Facing 51 is the right decision. The log fire fits the wall like it was built for it.

Configure it with a mesh screen or double glass with glass 15 3/4" or 21 5/8" tall and driftwood, valley oak, or birch logs.
