Who It's For

A wood stove goes cold a couple of hours after the last log. You want the room still warm at midnight from a fire you stopped feeding at nine. You need a stove with mass in it. If you want the open fire, the glass fire, and the heater, and you want the warmth to outlast the flames, the Stûv 30-compact H is the one; the standard 30-compact gives you the three modes without the stored heat.

What Makes It Special

Under the drum sits a 330-pound core of refractory brick. It soaks up heat while the fire burns and radiates it back for hours after, so the room does not drop the moment the flames do.

Above it is the same three-door drum as the 30-compact: open fire, glass door, or solid door, turned by hand, with the smoke deflector moving with the drum. The whole stove rotates up to 360 degrees and stands eight inches from a wall on its double-walled back.

A BBQ grill sits over the open fire for cooking by radiant heat; the juices catch in a stainless tray and the smell goes up the chimney, not into the kitchen.

Possible Downsides

• Logs load upright and top out at 16 inches. Longer splits need cutting before they go in.
• The heat core adds 330 pounds to a 340-pound stove. Plan the floor for it.
• The open-fire mode wants the fire screen, sold separately.
