Who It's For

A stove that sits flat on the floor can feel heavy in a light, open room. You want the fire up where you see it and air underneath so the piece looks light. You need a stove on legs. If that is the look your room asks for, the Stûv 16-V is the one; the cube on the floor gives the same fire with more visual weight.

What Makes It Special

There is no fan anywhere in a Stûv 16. Room air enters low, warms along the firebox, and leaves through a slot at the top on its own. That is why the stove is silent, why it keeps heating when the power is out, and why there is nothing to wear out or replace.

Four slim steel legs raise the firebox about a foot, so the fire sits at eye height from a chair and the floor runs under it. The stove reads as light as a side table.

The air feed is set once at the factory and left alone. You start the fire and close the door; the stove manages the burn, and a sweep of air across the glass keeps it clear so you see flames, not soot. Air jets at the top of the firebox burn the smoke a second time, which is how it clears the strictest North American emission standards with 1.5 to 1.8 grams of particulate an hour.

Possible Downsides

• No fan, so it warms the room it stands in. Heat reaches the next room by convection only.
• Nothing stores underneath. If you want the wood built in, look at the 16-H.
• The door needs its key to open. There is no handle.

If you want the fire raised and the floor kept clear, the Stûv 16-V is the right decision. From the couch you look straight into the flames, not down at them.
