Who It's For

A wood fireplace that takes hauling, lighting, and cleaning tends to sit dark most nights. You need a fire you'll actually turn on. If you have a grand masonry hearth or a great room wall and want a fire with traditional proportions—upright flames and a full log set—at the press of a button, the 54-inch Orion Traditional is the one. Leave the opening as it is and it stays a dark box; put this in and it becomes the fire you use every evening.

What Makes It Special

The fire is drawn on an LCD screen, which gives it height and depth that LED flames can't match, framed like a classic fireplace rather than a long linear strip. The logs glow in color, the ember bed and the downlighting each take their own color, and you choose from three flame styles in six colors with a crackling sound you can turn up or off.

It slides into most existing fireplace openings as an insert, or builds in flush with a clean face, and it plugs into a standard outlet. On that plug the fan-forced heater warms about 400 square feet; wired for 240 volts it reaches about 700. Either way it's supplemental heat for the room you're in, and the flames run with the heat off whenever you just want the look.

Possible Downsides

  • The manufacturer rates it for supplemental heat only; it warms the room, not the house.
  • The top of its heating range needs a 240-volt circuit; on the standard plug it covers about 400 square feet.
  • Surround trim kits aren't offered for this size; they're made for the 26-, 30-, and 36-inch models.

If your fireplace has sat dark for years and you want a traditional fire you'll actually use, the 54-inch Orion Traditional is the right decision. The opening you stopped noticing becomes the room everyone ends up in.

Options include the TruWood Premium Timber log kit sized for 52–60-inch units.
