A larger log-fire insert for a full-size wood-burning fireplace.
Quick Facts
- Heating Capacity: 900–1,750 sq ft
- Fuel: Natural gas or propane.
- Controls: Remote with thermostat included; wall switch and phone app available.
Who It's For
A full-size wood fireplace looks empty with a small insert sitting in it. You need an insert that fills the opening and a fire that looks laid. If your existing wood-burning fireplace is a larger one, the Wilderness Insert 34 is the bigger of the two inserts and carries the higher heat estimate. The 29 is meant for smaller openings.
What Makes It Special
The 34 takes dark brown or chopped wood ceramic logs, laid like a real fire. Its surrounds run larger, up to 33 by 46 inches, so the face can cover a bigger opening without gaps.
By our math on Ortal's gas input, it's sized to warm approximately 900 to 1,750 square feet.
Its heat barrier is a fine metal mesh screen, close to invisible from the couch. The included remote has a thermostat mode, so you set a temperature and it manages the flame.
Possible Downsides
- Surround, screen front, and interior panel are all separate choices; for a smaller opening, the Wilderness Insert 29 is the better fit.
- The black reflective interior is optional, not standard.
If you want a large wood fireplace turned into a realistic gas heater, the Wilderness Insert 34 is the right decision. Cold evenings start in front of the fireplace again.
Choose dark brown or chopped wood logs; a classic rectangular, classic arched, or sleek rectangular screen front in black, brushed chrome, antique bronze, antique steel, or burnished copper; a surround from extra small to large or four-sided; and a black reflective, Blackridge, or red or tan brick panel.

Can you get an instant online estimate for the Ortal Wilderness 34?
Yes—right on this page. Configure the Ortal Wilderness 34 and get a free, no-obligation instant estimate covering the unit as configured, a fitting vent kit, and professional installation labor. No phone call required.
What's included in the online estimate?
The unit with the options you selected, a real vent kit matched to your venting, and the installation labor for a typical setup. Your free one-to-two-hour in-home visit confirms every detail before anything is ordered.
Who pulls the permit?
We do, on every job, in every jurisdiction we serve—and we meet the inspector. It's built into the process, not an upsell.
Can you see the Ortal Wilderness 34 in a photo of your own room?
Yes. The Visualizer tab on this page renders the Ortal Wilderness 34 into a straight-on photo of your wall, scaled to the room, so you see it in your space before you price a thing. Phone photos are fine. It's a faithful preview, not an architectural drawing; sizing, venting, and trim get confirmed at the free in-home visit.
Is the online estimate real, or a rough guess?
Real, and honest about what it is: a price for the Ortal Wilderness 34 as configured, a fitting vent kit, and professional installation labor, built from real Seattle installs. It is not binding. The free one-to-two-hour in-home visit checks your actual house before the price is final, and nothing is ordered until then.
Do you install and service the Ortal Wilderness 34 yourselves?
Yes, both. Our own in-house installers set the Ortal Wilderness 34, run the venting and the gas, pull the permit, and light the first fire before leaving. Afterward the service desk looks after every unit that came from Sutter, with factory-trained technicians and a real date when you call.
