A large fire for the wall that can't take one—quiet, radiant, and still burning when the power's out.

Quick Facts

  • Heating Capacity: 750–1,500 sq ft
  • Efficiency: 71% (EnerGuide)
  • Viewing Area: 30"
  • Fuel: Natural gas or propane.
  • Controls: Remote with thermostat and timer included; battery powered, so it works through an outage.
  • Fan: Optional

Who It's For

The wall you want the fire on won't take a wide fireplace, but a small flame in a big room looks like an afterthought—and you'd rather not listen to a blower all evening to feel warm. You need a large fire that fits a compact space and heats without a fan. If that's your room, the Valor H5 is the one: a generous viewing area in a footprint that fits where its bigger brother, the H6, can't. Pick a standard fan-driven unit instead and you'll get the warmth, but you'll hear it running—and it moves far less heat when the power's out.

What Makes It Special

The H5's burner, ceramic glass, and low-mass logs are all built to do one thing: radiate heat into the room—into the floor, the couch, you—the way the sun warms your face. A built-in secondary heat exchanger moves warm air by natural convection on top of that, so there's no fan required and nothing to hear. Sit down and it feels like a blanket straight out of the dryer.

Here's the real game-changer: the H5 runs on four AA batteries as its primary power source—not as a backup like other brands. The remote and the fire itself keep working through an outage, and because the heat is radiant, no fan has to spin for you to feel it. In a dark house in January, that's the difference between a fireplace and a heat source.

Possible Downsides

  • The fan is optional, not included. The H5 heats on its own by radiant warmth and natural convection; add the fan kit if you want air pushed farther.
  • There is no overhead firebox lighting. If you want the logs lit even when the fire is off, look at the larger H6.
  • App and WiFi control are optional upgrades. The included remote handles thermostat, timer, and programming on its own.

If you've been struggling to fit a large fire into the space you actually have, the H5 is the right decision. The room it's in becomes the room the house lives in.

The H5 takes your choice of birch, driftwood, or traditional log sets, six liners from gray brick to reflective glass, and five fronts ranging from a slim black frame to a Craftsman front in aged steel, so the fire matches the room you already have.
