The longest see-through Ortal makes, about eight feet.

Quick Facts

  • Heating Capacity: 1,300–2,650 sq ft
  • Viewing Area: 96 1/4" wide
  • Fuel: Natural gas; propane with a conversion kit.
  • Controls: Remote with thermostat included; wall switch and phone app available.

Who It's For

In the largest homes, the wall between two great rooms can be long enough that only the biggest tunnel keeps its proportion. If you want a 96 1/4-inch see-through with glass 15 3/4, 21 5/8, or 30 inches tall, the Tunnel 250 is the one.

What Makes It Special

The 250 tunnel runs the 180 burner, the largest in Ortal's built-in line, with three glass heights, so both rooms see an eight-foot fire.

Nothing frames the opening but your own finish, and because of Ortal's passive cool wall, the wall above stays open for a TV or artwork. Expect it to warm roughly 1,300 to 2,650 square feet, our estimate from Ortal's gas input.

You pick the barrier: a fine protective mesh screen, or double glass with quiet fans moving room air between the panes to keep the outer glass cooler. Skip the lighting and use the screen, and batteries alone can run it—it still lights when the power is out. The included remote has a thermostat mode, so you set a temperature and it manages the flame.

Possible Downsides

  • The double-glass and tall-glass versions need household power (tall-glass models include interior lighting) and won't run in an outage.
  • It needs a very long wall; the Tunnel 200 is close on warmth with about 19 fewer inches.
  • Natural gas is the factory setup; switching to propane means an Ortal conversion kit and an authorized technician.

If you want the longest see-through fire there is, the Tunnel 250 is the right decision. Two great rooms share one long fire.

Make it yours with a mesh screen or double glass with glass 15 3/4", 21 5/8", or 30" tall and an included log set—standard, driftwood, clay, or English—or a bonfire, campfire, aspen, or branch upgrade.
