A see-through fire more than five feet tall.

Quick Facts

  • Heating Capacity: 750–1,450 sq ft
  • Viewing Area: 30 5/8" wide
  • Fuel: Natural gas; propane with a conversion kit.
  • Controls: Remote with thermostat included; wall switch and phone app available.

Who It's For

A tall wall between two spaces—a double-height living room and a stair hall, say—can carry a vertical fire that both sides see. You need height. If you want a 30 5/8-inch-wide, 64 15/16-inch-tall see-through, the Tunnel 31H is the one.

What Makes It Special

The 31H tunnel keeps the 75x65's width and nearly triples the height, on the same 45 burner, so the effect is a column of fire seen from two rooms.

Nothing frames the opening but your own finish, and because of Ortal's passive cool wall, the wall above stays open for a TV or artwork. Expect it to warm roughly 750 to 1,450 square feet, our estimate from Ortal's gas input.

Choose between a protective mesh screen and double glass; the double glass uses quiet fans between the panes so the front stays cooler to the touch. Skip the lighting and use the screen, and batteries alone can run it—it still lights when the power is out. Pick a temperature on the remote that comes with it, and the fire turns itself up and down to hold it.

Possible Downsides

  • The double-glass version needs household power and won't run during an outage.
  • Its estimated warmth is the same as the 75x65; the height is for looks, so choose a linear tunnel for more reach.
  • Natural gas is the factory setup; switching to propane means an Ortal conversion kit and an authorized technician.

If you want a tall column of fire both rooms can see, the Tunnel 31H is the right decision. The tall wall becomes the most striking thing in the house.

Choose a mesh screen or double glass and an included log set—standard, driftwood, clay, or English—or a bonfire, campfire, aspen, or branch upgrade.
