A chopped-wood log fire for a smaller wood-burning fireplace.
Quick Facts
- Heating Capacity: 750–1,500 sq ft
- Fuel: Natural gas or propane.
- Controls: Remote with thermostat included; wall switch and phone app available.
Who It's For
A small wood-burning fireplace is a lot of work for a little warmth, and most of its heat goes up the chimney. You need a gas fire that seals into the opening you already have. If your existing masonry or factory-built wood fireplace is on the smaller side, the Wilderness Insert 29 is the size for it. Larger openings call for the 34.
What Makes It Special
Ceramic chopped wood logs are stacked like a split-firewood fire, with flame rising through them. Surrounds come in extra small, small, medium, large, and four-sided sizes so the face covers your opening cleanly.
Our estimate from Ortal's gas input puts its reach at roughly 750 to 1,500 square feet.
A fine protective mesh screen keeps hands off the hot glass without hiding the fire. Set a temperature on the included remote and it holds the room there on its own.
Possible Downsides
- Chopped wood is the only log style on the 29; the Wilderness Insert 34 adds a dark brown set and fits larger openings.
- The black reflective interior is optional, not standard.
If you want a small wood fireplace turned into a realistic gas fire, the Wilderness Insert 29 is the right decision. The fireplace you stopped using becomes the warmest spot in the house.
Choose a classic rectangular, classic arched, or sleek rectangular screen front in finishes from black and brushed chrome to antique bronze, antique steel, and burnished copper, then a surround size and a black reflective, Blackridge, or red or tan brick interior panel.

Can you get an instant online estimate for the Ortal Wilderness 29?
Yes—right on this page. Configure the Ortal Wilderness 29 and get a free, no-obligation instant estimate covering the unit as configured, a fitting vent kit, and professional installation labor. No phone call required.
What's included in the online estimate?
The unit with the options you selected, a real vent kit matched to your venting, and the installation labor for a typical setup. Your free one-to-two-hour in-home visit confirms every detail before anything is ordered.
Who pulls the permit?
We do, on every job, in every jurisdiction we serve—and we meet the inspector. It's built into the process, not an upsell.
Can you see the Ortal Wilderness 29 in a photo of your own room?
Yes. The Visualizer tab on this page renders the Ortal Wilderness 29 into a straight-on photo of your wall, scaled to the room, so you see it in your space before you price a thing. Phone photos are fine. It's a faithful preview, not an architectural drawing; sizing, venting, and trim get confirmed at the free in-home visit.
Is the online estimate real, or a rough guess?
Real, and honest about what it is: a price for the Ortal Wilderness 29 as configured, a fitting vent kit, and professional installation labor, built from real Seattle installs. It is not binding. The free one-to-two-hour in-home visit checks your actual house before the price is final, and nothing is ordered until then.
Do you install and service the Ortal Wilderness 29 yourselves?
Yes, both. Our own in-house installers set the Ortal Wilderness 29, run the venting and the gas, pull the permit, and light the first fire before leaving. Afterward the service desk looks after every unit that came from Sutter, with factory-trained technicians and a real date when you call.
