A wood-burning insert is the best way to enhance the efficiency of an existing fireplace. Most masonry fireplaces will accommodate a wood-burning insert.
When installing an insert, it is necessary to provide a chimney liner connecting the insert to the top of the existing chimney . It is also often necessary to increase the depth of the existing fireplace hearth to meet the floor-protection requirements of woodburning inserts.
A conventional fireplace often operates at negative efficiency. It takes more heat out of the room than it contributes over an operating cycle. Inserts will dramatically change this net heat loss to heat gain and provide an efficiency rate of 65 to 75 percent.
