With the decline of the art of masonry and its higher cost, many people are now choosing to install metal wood-burning fireplaces in remodels, as well as in new construction.

These factory-built fireplaces are often referred to as "zero clearance." Though somewhat of a misnomer, they can be framed in with combustible materials and covered over to look very much like a real masonry fireplace.

The key is to select a model that has the opening proportions of a masonry fireplace and can be covered with brick,

tile, marble or other materials to the extent that the metal box is completely covered and only the opening and interior brick are visible.

A heavy-duty metal fireplace with heavy brick liners will provide greater durability and realism. In Washington state, glass doors and outside combustion air ducts are required.

Metal wood-burning fireplaces must also meet Washington state's combustion efficiency standards. These fireplaces can also be fitted with decorative gas logs if you prefer not to burn wood.
